M c M u rre n , Dean o f convocation. T h e new vicar at St. P h ilip is an O regonian through and through. He was born in M o ro , was educated at the U n iv e rs ity o f O regon and jo u r neyed to C a lif o r n ia to receive his M a s te r o f D iv in ity degree in 1955. H e was made priest by Bishop Ben ja m in D a g w e ll and spend m an y years o f his early priesthood devel oping missions and churches in O re g o n , in c lu d in g D a lla s and M o n m outh. Fa. Schadewitz was in the state o f W ashington for a period o f tim e as re c to r o f H o ly T r in it y C h u rc h in H oquiam from I9 6 0 to 1970, and as assistant-rector at C hrist Church in Tacom a, from 1973 to 1980. F ro m the C h a p la in ’ s s ta f f at G o o d S a m a rita n H o s p ita l in P o r t la n d , F a . S c h a d e w itz cam e to S t. P h ilip as p rie s t-in -c h a rg e in 1981. His home is in N .E . Portland where he has lived fo r some time. M usic, in the charge o f Robert L. S to ltz, organist o f T rin ity C h u rc h , and D a v id K e lly , ch oirm aster, was out o f tr a d itio n a l E p is c o p a l h y m nals, but the o ffe rto ry music had a different sound. It was " L i f t E v e ry V o ic e and S in g ," by James W eld o n Johnson, the n a tio n a l N egro an th e m — by re quest o f the new rector o f St. Philip: Father M . Ramsey Schadewitz. T he reception, meant to be social as Kay had wanted, had a little p oli tical flavor, but it couldn’ t be avoid ed since this is an election year. Kay said she h o n e s tly w a n te d to “ let people know how good M r . A tiyeh really is ," and the best w ay was to invite folks in to meet him in an in fo rm a l w a y .
